Automatic enrollment has proven to be one of the most effective methods to increase participation in defined contribution plans. However, the provision remains prohibited in half of the sates while another 16 limit it in some form. In the absence of auto enrollment plan sponsors and industry providers are employing strategic techniques to increase enrollment.

In 2019, NAGDCA awarded multiple plans from across the country who were successful in utilizing enrollment campaigns to increase participation. Although the campaigns differ in many ways, common trends emerge that may be helpful to plans of all sizes when developing campaigns aimed at increasing enrollment.
