Model Language from NAGDCA’s Auto Enrollment Guide Reflected in New LawDRS-Logo-Black

We’re thrilled to share that Washington State’s HB 1270—enabling automatic enrollment for county, municipal, and other political subdivision employees—has passed both chambers of the legislature unanimously and is expected to be signed into law by the governor in the coming weeks.

This legislation aligns closely with the model provisions outlined in NAGDCA’s Auto Enrollment Guide for Public Plan Sponsors, demonstrating how our advocacy resources can support policy change that improves retirement security for public employees.

The new law gives local governments the authority to auto-enroll newly hired employees into a deferred compensation plan—unless the employee affirmatively opts out—bringing Washington’s local governments in line with best practices proven to increase plan participation and savings rates.

We applaud the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems for their leadership in advancing this important change, and we’re proud to have supported their efforts.

To help other states explore similar legislation, we encourage members and policymakers to review our comprehensive Auto Enrollment Guide and Model Legislation.
