The latest Public Retirement Research Lab (PRRL) State of DC Plans Study, based on year-end 2024 data, examines participant savings behaviors across public sector defined contribution plans. Drawing on data from NAGDCA member plans, the report highlights trends in account balances, contributions, loan usage, and investment allocations by participant age and tenure.

Key findings include:

  • Account balances increased steadily with both age and years of service, reflecting the long-term value of consistent participation and saving.
  • Employee contributions generally rose with age, with older participants contributing higher dollar amounts and larger percentages of salary.
  • Loan usage peaked among participants in their 40s, while loan balances represented a smaller share of account balances as participants aged.
  • Asset allocation shifted over time, with younger participants investing primarily in target-date funds and older participants gradually increasing allocations to more conservative investments.
