NS4RW Resolution
2009 National Save for Retirement Week:
In follow up to the successful passage of the Resolution in 2006, 2007, and 2008 Representatives Allyson Schwartz (D-PA) and Sam Johnson (R-TX) introduced H. Res. 662 on July 20, 2009. The Resolution was passed in the House on July 31st and it establishes the week of October 18, 2009 as National Save for Retirement Week. Both Schwartz and Johnson are members of the House Committee on Ways & Means and are active members on retirement and pension related matters. The Senate also passed a resolution, co-sponsored by Senator Conrad (D-ND), Chairman, Senate Committee on the Budget and member, Senate Committee on Finance Senator Enzi (R-WY), Ranking Member, Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and member Senate Committee on Finance, on August 3rd by unanimous consent. Building on the positive nationwide response to Savings for Retirement Week, NAGDCA has worked closely with the Senate and House in order to ensure passage this year of the Resolution and further the goal of educating and urging employees—both public and private—to increase their savings for retirement.
Representative Johnson gave the following statement “Saving for retirement is not as flashy or fun as many competing priorities but the only way most of us are ever going to be able to afford retirement in the future, is by saving today. I hope to work with many employers in my Congressional District this year to bring the message of ‘Save for Retirement Week' to employees.”
