National Save for Retirement Week

National Save for Retirement Week (NS4RW) was first introduced by NAGDCA in 2006. NS4RW was developed to raise the awareness about the importance of saving for retirement and to create a culture that promotes and values saving in the workplace and the community. It is the first congressionally endorsed, national event formally calling on employers to promote the benefits of saving for retirement, and encourage their employees to take full advantage of employer-sponsored plans.

Now more than ever employees need to be aware of how critical it is to save for their financial future, and employers need to help promote the benefits of getting started today to save for retirement.

The 2009 National Save for Retirement Week Resolution passed July 31, 2009 in the United States House of Representatives. In follow up to the successful passage of the Resolution in 2006, 2007, and 2008, Representatives Allyson Schwartz (D-PA) and Sam Johnson (R-TX) introduced H. Res. 662 on July 20, 2009.  The Resolution establishes the week of October 18, 2009 as National Save for Retirement Week.  Both Schwartz and Johnson are members of the House Committee on Ways & Means and are active members on retirement and pension related matters.

On August 3, 2009, S. Res. 234 calling for National Save for Retirement Week passed in the Senate by unanimous consent. The resolution was co-sponsored by Senator Conrad (D-ND), Chairman, Senate Committee on the Budget and member, Senate Committee on Finance and Senator Enzi (R-WY), Ranking Member, Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and member Senate Committee on Finance. NAGDCA works closely with the Senate and House every year to ensure passage of the Resolution.

The following NAGDCA members won a 2009 Leadership Special Award of Distinction for having an entire campaign or specific strategy that effectively raised the awareness of NS4RW and drove measurable activities and results as well as generated local or national media coverage in 2008.
  • Ventura County, CA - In an effort to engage employees in a fun and inventive way, while still relaying important educational information relating to saving and investing, the County adopted a “fairy tale” theme and developed many creative educational communications leveraging widely-recognized tales.
  • Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago – To generate more awareness about the District's deferred compensation program and to highlight the overall importance of saving for the future, the District developed a week-long schedule of activities to observe NS4RW.
  • State of New Jersey – The Division of Pensions and Benefits partnered with Prudential Retirement to produce a multi-media campaign including posters, email messages, as well as website coverage and Interactive Voice Response service recordings.

Visit NAGDCA's NS4RW resource page to find posters, web banners, educational flyers, email messages and presentations. These materials were designed for Plan Administrators and Plan Sponsors to assist with providing NS4RW education for employees. A communication plan was developed to help employers know what activities should be done and when they should begin planning for NS4RW. The plan can be found on the NS4RW resource page as well at http://www.nagdca.org/content.cfm/id/ns4rw_resource_center
