San Diego, California, located on the Southern California seacoast, is the second largest city in the state and the eighth largest city in the nation, with 1.3 million residents. It is known for its ideal climate, miles of beaches, and location on the Mexican border, right across from Tijuana. It has a rich heritage built around sailing and is home to the Pacific Fleet of the United States Navy. It is also well known for its part in the wildlife conservation movement, being home to a SeaWorld theme park and the 'world-famous' San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, and it offers a great setting for the NAGDCA 2012 Annual Conference.
Our conference theme is “Surf's Up For A Secure Retirement.” The conference committee has put together an agenda that will prove to be timely and educational, beginning with Keynote Speaker Mellody Hobson, president of Ariel Investments, and the chairman of the board of trustees for Ariel Investment Trust. She is also a director of DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc., The Estee Lauder Companies, Inc., Starbucks Corporation, and Groupon, to name a few. Beyond her work in finance and investor education, Ms. Hobson has become a nationally recognized voice on financial literacy and investor education. Specifically, she is a regular financial contributor on Good Morning America, the featured consumer finance expert on Tom Joyner's Money Mondays radio program, and a regular columnist for Black Enterprise.
I'm also pleased to announce that Professor Shlomo Benartzi will be our closing session speaker. Professor Benartzi is a leading authority on Behavioral Finance, with special interests in retirement planning, investor behavior, and behavioral wealth management. He is currently co-chair of the Behavioral Decision-Making Group at UCLA Anderson, as well as a co-founder of the Behavioral Finance Forum. Professor Benartzi's most significant research contribution is the development of Save More Tomorrow™ (SMarT), a behavioral prescription designed to help employees increase their savings rates gradually over time.
Based upon the success and positive feedback we received after last year's conference, we will continue the two track approach with a goal of reaching specific audiences. Track A is geared toward the newer NAGDCA member or someone new to their position (generally less than 5 years in the industry) and will focus on Deferred Compensation basics. Track B is designed for Administrators (more than 5 years in the industry) and those seeking more detailed discussions of specific Plan Administration issues.
This year's Conference committee members are:
Chair: Tom Mueller, Sanitation Districts of LA County, CA
Scott Dauenhauer, SST Benefits
Michael Golojuch, City and County of Honolulu, HI
Mindy Harris, Retired from Multnomah County, OR
Lyn Howarth, County of San Diego, CA
Tim Richman, BlackRock
Rosemary Roberts, ICMA-RC
Greg Settle, Hyas Group
Kerrie Vanden Bosch, State of Michigan

The Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina enjoys a prime waterfront location on lovely San Diego Bay. World-renowned Balboa Park is home to 15 museums, various arts and international culture associations, the Gaslamp Quarter, which offers premier dining, shopping and entertainment, as well as the San Diego Zoo, making it one of the nation's largest cultural and entertainment complexes.
A goal of the NAGDCA Executive Board is to provide timely and valuable education to the NAGDCA membership. We believe this conference will meet that goal. Please join us this September 2012 in beautiful San Diego, California.
